Coin and Banknote Shopping Arcade in Seoul, Korea

For many Korean coin and banknote collectors, one place where they never want to miss out is the Heohyeon underground. This is a place where your can find more than 15 outlets store of stamp, banknote and coin stores gather together at an underground shopping mall.

Located just 5 to 10 minutes of walking distance away from Myeong-dong, a famous shopping place in Seoul, is one of the definite itinerary for many visitor in Seoul. I was managed to pay the place a visit during my recent tour to Seoul.

At Heohyeon underground arcade, you can find just about every stamp, banknote and coin ever issued in Korea. Prices are ranging from few hundred won to few million won. Most of the outlets here are run by experts with enthusiasm in collecting. Besides Korean coin and banknote, you can also find few outlets that offer world currency collection.

I was excited when visiting the place but it was not a fortunate day for me where many stores were closed during my visit day due to festival season. Nevertheless, I still manage to bag some items with reasonable prices.

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung, the oldest palace of Jeseon Dynasty, is located at the northern end of Sejon-ro Street. It was the main and largest palace of the five grand palaces that built by the Joseon Dynasty. The Gyeongbokgung palace was first constructed in 1394 and reconstructed in 1867.

Gyeonghoeru Pavillion, also known as The Royal Banquet Hall, is one of many buildings that boast exquisite architecture in the grandest garden landscape in Gyeongbokgung. It was used as a special hall to hold important and special state banquets during the Joseon Dynasty.

It is such a unique and important building that the Bank of Korea has adopted its image to depict at the reverse of 10000 Won issued in 1979 as shown below.

Korea Banknote - 1972 to 1973 Series

Bank of Korea started printing its own banknote in 1962 with lower denominations such as 10 and 50 Jeon and also 10, 50, 100 and 500 won. However due to economic development in 60s and 70s, higher denomination notes with the face value of 5000 and 10000 Won were introduced by Bank of Korea in 1972 and 1973 respectively to meet the people need in their business activity.

Be specifically the 5000 Won note was released on 1 July 1972 and followed by the introduction of 10000 Won note on 12 June 1973. The 5000 Won note features the portrait of Yi I at the obverse and the picture of Bank of Korea building at its reverse side. Meanwhile, the 10000 Won note carries the portrait of King of Sejong at front and image of Gyeongbok Palace illustrated at the reverse of the note.

Korea Banknote - 1973 to 1979 Series

This series of banknote issued from 1973 to 1979 was printed by the Bank of Korea with the intention to standardize the portrait appear on Korean currency after the introduction of higher denominations such as 5000 and 10000 Won in 1973.

The portraits on the notes that we see on this issuance have inherited to the current series of Korean banknote (2006 to 2009 series). In other words, the portrait of Yi Huang, Yi I and King of Sejong on banknote 1000, 5000 and 10000 Won adopted in this series of note are the same as circulating notes.

Another interest fact is that these notes were printed with the paper made in Korea. It showed that the Korean-made paper was at a quality par with any other notes in the world.

Korea Banknote - 1983 to 2002 Series

This series of Korean banknote consists of three denominations i.e. 1000 Won, 5000 Won and 10000 Won as its previous series. However, the Bank of Korea has made these notes smaller and counterfeiting proof by adding more security features onto the notes.

This series of Korea notes was first issued in 1983 with the release of 1000 and 5000 Won on 11 June 1983. It was then followed by the introduction of 10000 Won on 8 October 1983. Throughout the years, these notes were improved and reissued with adding new security elements.

The second revision of 5000 Won has been reissued on 12 June 2002. In addition, the 10000 Won has gone through two revisions which the second and third revision were released on 20 January 1994 and 19 June 2000 respectively. The intention of the above revisions is to enhance the banknote security against counterfeiting.

Korea Banknote - 2006 to 2009 Series

The current series of Korean banknotes consists of four denominations which are 1000 won, 5000 won, 10000 won and 50000 won. This new series of banknote was first introduced by Bank of Korea in 2006 with the release of 5000 won note on 2 January 2006. On the subsequent year, 1000 won and 10000 won notes were issued concurrently on 22 January 2007. The latest issuance note with the highest denomination 50000 won was launched on 23 June 2009.

The obverse features portrait of Yi Huang on the right. Yi Huang is one of the most prominent Korean Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. The background illustrates the Myeongryundang in Seonggyungwan. The reverse features Gyesangjeonggeodo painted by Gyeomjae Jeong Seon.

5000 won

The obverse features the portrait of Yi I. Yi I is another most prominent Korean Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. The background illustrates the Ojukheon in Gangneung. The reverse features Chochung-do "Insects and Plants", a painting of a watermelon and cockscombs by Yi I's mother Sin Saimdang.

10000 won

The obverse features the portrait of King of Sejong, the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. The background illustrates a folding screen for Joseon-era kings and text from the second chapter of Yongbieocheonga, the first work of literature written in Korean. The reverse features Globe of Honcheonsigye and Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido in the background.

Bank of Korea Issues 50000 Won Note

The Bank of Korea issued its new denomination note 50,000 Won on 23 June 2009. It is the highest-denomination note issued since the 10,000 Won was issued in 1973. It is also the first Korean banknote to carry the portrait of women in this male-dominated society. The appearance of a women portrait in Korean banknote has shown the government determination to improve the women status and gender equality in Korean society.

The obverse of the note features the portrait of Sin saimdang (1504~1551). One of the prominent female artist of Joseon Dynasty. She produced many valuable pieces of poems, works of calligraphy and paintings.

The reverse of the note features two outstanding paintings produced in mid of Jeseon Dymasty namely Wolmaedo and Poongjukdo. Wolmaedo is a painting of a Mumetree by Eo Mongryong and Poongjukdo is a painting of Bamboos by Lee Jeong.

This 50,000 Won banknote has a special edition that comes with a special folder and certificate. I managed to grab one of them during my recent visit to Korea.

Each special edition note comes with a certificate that has the same serial number as printed in the note. Noted that the serial number i.e. 14328 printed in this certificate is the same as shown in banknote photo above.

I bought this Korean Coins and Banknotes Catalogue 2011 during my recent to visit to Korea. This catalogue was published in July 2010 and edited by Korean Coins and Banknotes Dealer Association. The guide book consists of more than 305 pages with color images of Korean coins and banknotes.

The book is mainly written in Korean language with a simple explanation in English. It has six sections that cover the origin and progress of Korean currency.

Section I - Explanation of words about brass coins.

Section II - Origin and progress of money. It covers the money of ancient and three country period, money of Goryeo period and money of Chosun dynasty.

Section III - Coins in the end of Chosun Era and the Former Korea.

Section IV - The current coins and the commemorative coins.

Section V - Personal checks, bonds and coupons.

Section VI -Banknotes. It covers from the Japan National Banknotes (during Japanese occupation), The establishing of Bank of Korea and its banknotes, and the current Korea banknote.

Thai Commemorative Banknote - The 60th Anniversary of the Royal Wedding

Bank of Thailand issued 100 Baht commemorative banknote on 4 May 2010 in conjunction with the celebration of The 60th Anniversary of the Royal Wedding of Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit and the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation.

The reverse of the commemorative note depicts the portrait of King Rama IX, the reigning monarch, waving his hand and standing next to him is Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

The front of the 100 Baht commemorative banknote features the same characteristics and size to the other 100 Baht banknotes in 15th Series, which are currently in circulation.

The reverse of this commemorative banknote depicts the portrait of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the reigning monarch, waving his hand and that of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The middle right corner features the portrait of His Majesty the King during the coronation. On the upper left corner is the Privy Seal of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, printed in red over the Thailand’s national flag. The lower left corner of the note printed in blue with Thai words and expressions: “We will reign with righteousness, for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.”, “The Coronation Speech” and “5th May B.E. 2493 (1950)".

< align="justify">The serial number of this commemorative banknote runs from 9R 0000001 to 9R 9999999. The prefix 9R represents King Rama IX.

Burma - 1985 to 1987 Series

This is one of my favorite series of Burma banknote simply because of the odd denominations. We usually see odd denomination appear on commemorative banknotes, but this series of Burma circulation notes used abnormal denominations such as 15, 35, 45, 75 and 90 Kyat.

It all began with the introduction of 75 Kyat note by Union of Burma Bank in November 1985. It is believed the odd denomination was introduced to commemorate Ne Win's birthday. He was the head of state from 1962 to 1981. This 75 Kyat note was then used as circulation note and subsequently led to the issuance of 15 and 35 Kyat notes in 1986. However, out of sudden the Burmese government demonetized the 25, 35 and 75 Kyat in 1987 resulted another political riot and eventually a coup in 1988. The 45 and 90 Kyat were introduced in 1987 which believed to be another favorite number of Ne Win.

Burma - 1972 To 1979 Series

The Union Bank of Burma issued a new series of banknote from 1972 to 1979. The series of notes were printed by the Security Printing Works in Wazi, Burma under the technical assistance of the German company Giesecke & Devrient. There were six denomination notes issued in this series. The 1 and 25 Kyat was issued in 1972, following with 5 and 10 Kyat in 1973. 50 and 100 Kyat were released in 1979 and 1976.

Indonesian Paper Money Catalogue 2010

The latest edition of Indonesian Paper Money Catalogue was released in October 2009. It is the third edition of the guide book. This edition is updated with the latest banknotes that issued by Bank of Indonesia issued from 2004 to 2009. Among them are Rp20,000 and Rp100,000 issued in 2004, Rp10,000 and Rp50,000 issued in 2005 and Rp2,000 issued in 2009. The catalogue also includes the uncut banknote released in those denominations.

Besides the above mentioned banknotes, the catalogue has updated the price of the banknotes. Especially on those rare banknotes, the author has revalued and updated with current market value.

Singapore Polymer Note - Additional Square Dot

It is observed that there is an additional feature on the latest polymer notes that issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Noted that there is a square dot underneath the wording "Sports" at the reverse of the following notes. For this particular $10 note, three varieties are observed. The initial issuance was without any square dot, but the subsequent issuance notes are with one square dot and two square dots.

The reason for having this feature has yet been clarified by the relevant authority. It is believed that the square dot is to differential the various printing made at different time. This square dot feature is also observed on other denominations.

Additional square dot is observed at the reverse of the note, underneath the wording. For instant, the square dot located underneath the word Sports for $10 Polymer Note.

Thai - 9th Series Banknote

The 9th series of Thai banknote consists of six denominations that include 50 Satang, 1 Baht, 5 Baht, 10 Baht, 20 Baht and 100 Baht. This series of banknote has been circulating for more than 20 years. There are five different types of note for each denomination due to different years of issuance.

Except for 50 Satang, all the front note features the portrait of King Rama IX with the images of different building or places such as the Phra Samut Chedi, the Phra Pathom Chedi, the Mahakarn Fortress and the Golden Mountain Stupa at the middle of the note. The back of the note depicts the Royal Anantasamakom Throne Hall.

The front of 50 Satang features the constitution on the pedestal tray in the middle under the Garuda and the Ayarapot (three headed elephant) at the right bottom corner. The back depicts an image of the Phra Samut Chedi.

Thai - 10th Series Banknote

There is only one type of note in 10th Series i.e. 100 Baht which was issued on 16 May 1968. The main reason of issuing this 100 Baht note was due to discovery of counterfeit note of 100 Baht of the 9th Series which was issued from 1947 to 1957.

The government of Thai decided to issue a new series of multi colored 100 Baht with an intaglio printed portrait in dark blue compared the the earlier series of 100 Baht note which was only printed in red color. To make the counterfeiting more difficult, this series of banknote embedded with security thread printed with microlettering Thailand at intervals.

This 100 Baht note was issued on 16 May 1968 and was printed by Thomas de la Rue. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX in the uniform of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The back depicts the Suphannahongs Royal Barge.

Thai - 11th Series Banknote

The 11th Series of Thai banknote consists of five denominations namely 5 Baht, 10 Baht, 20 Baht, 100 Baht and 500 Baht. This series of banknote was issued started from the lowest denomination of 5 Baht in June 1969 to the highest denomination of 500 Baht in July 1975. The 500 Baht was printed for the first time by Bank of Thailand.

One of the interesting fact of this series of banknote is the involvement of the Note Printing Works which had begun their operations with the printing of banknotes in 1969. The Note Printing Works had managed to get through the whole production process, including the designing and engraving. But, the initial stage of its operation did rely on the foreign experts especially in producing the printing plates with joint effort from the Fine Arts Department particularly in unique Thai characteristics.

I personally like this series of the note because of the unique images depicted at the back of the notes. The images are so fine and truly reflect the Thai culture.

5 Baht

This 5 Baht note was issued in 24 June 1969. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX and the back depicts the Arphonphimoke Prasat Pavilion.

10 Baht

This 10 Baht note was issued on 24 June 1969. The front features the King Rama IX and the back depicts the ordination hall of the Marble Temple.

20 Baht

This 20 Baht note was issued on 9 June 1971. The front features the King Rama IX and the back depicts the Anantanagaraj Royal Barge.

100 Baht

This 20 Baht note was issued on 5 October 1972. The front features the King Rama IX and the back depicts the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

500 Baht

This 500 Baht note was issued on 18 July 1975. The front features the King Rama IX and the back depicts the Phra Prang Sam Yod in Lopburi.

The Melion

One of the features that you do not want to miss if you travel to Singapore is the statue of Merlion. Merlion is an imaginary creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its name was created with the combination of "mer" and "lion" in which the "mer" carries a meaning of the sea. It is believed that the the fish body came from a fishing village of Temasek, a "sea town" according to Javanese language and the lion head represents the original name of Singapore, meaning of "lion city" or "kota singa" in Sanskrit and Malay languages.

This unique Merlion statue was used as a feature and depicted on the 2nd Series of Singaporean banknote - Ship Series. It is illustrated on the upper right corner of $5 reverse note.

There are many statues of Merlion in Singapore. During my recent revisit to Singapore, I was able to snap the photos of two statues of Merlion located in Merlion park near the Singapore's Central Business District (CBD) and also located in Sentosa Island.

This is one of the earliest catalogue on Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Coins and Paper Money by International Stamp & Coin Co. Ltd. which was published in 1985. This catalogue consists of two parts : Part One covers the coins from British North Borneo, British Trade Dollars, Brunei, Malaya, Malaya & British Borneo, Malaysia, Penang, Sarawak, Singapore and Straits Settlements. The Part Two of this catalogue provides the information of paper money that includes Asian Japanese Occupation (Burma, Malaya, Netherland East Indies, Oceania, Philippines), British North Borneo, Brunei, Malaya, Malaya & British North Borneo, Malaya Private Paper Currency, Rubber Export Coupons, Sawarak, Singapore and Straits Settlement.

This catalogues has a total of 168 pages and it was printed in black and white. All the coins and paper money listed in this catalogue is tagged with an estimated price which was based on current marker price. This is one of the earlier method that collectors can buy coins and paper money through a dealer. Unlike the modern technology now which the internal access is so common and advance that allow one to browse through and purchase from any dealer within few minutes.

Bunga Bangkai or Corpse Flower

This 1982 series of 500Rp Indonesian banknote features Bunga Bangkai or Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum), one of the flowering plants with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. In other words, it is the largest flower with cluster of flowers arranged on the stem that is composed on a main branch. Of course many recognise the Rafflesia as the world number one flower. Indeed, Rafflesia is the largest single flower in the world.

The local name of Bunga Bangkai or Corpse Flower was named in such the way that Bunga means flower and Bangkai means corpse. The flower name was adopted mainly due to fragrance which is reminiscent of the smell of a decomposing mammal. It was originally found in the tropical forests of Sumatra, Indonesia. One interesting of this flower is that it can grow up the 3 meters or 10 feet height.

The tropical forest of Southeast Asia is home to many flora and fauna that you can only see them in this part of planet. Many of them are already classified as endangered species and protected by the local government or international organizations.

This is 1992 series of 500Rp Indonesian banknote that features an Orangutan, one of the intelligent great apes in the world. Orangutan is one of the endangered species of great apes and can only be found in rainforest of Sabah and Sarawak of Malaysia and also Kalimantan and Sumatra of Indonesia.

The origin of Orangutan name indeeds is derived from the Indonesian and Malays words in which the Orang means 'person' and Utan or Hutan means 'forest'. Thus, the local people name this great apes as 'person of the forest' mainly due to its similarity of outlook to human being. The fact is this great apes are our closest relatives in the animal world, sharing 97% of same DNA with us - human being.

The 500Rp banknote issued on 28 December 1992 features an Orang Utan.

A typical Orangutan can reach up to standing height of 1.2 to 1.5 meters with the body weight of 33 to 82 kilograms. Their lifespan is about 35 to 40 years in wild habitat. In view of the endangered situation of this great apes, there are already many organisations out there are so dedicated to the conservation of Orangutan and their natural rainforest home. We should support all of them by all mean.

Komodo Dragon

This is an Indonesian banknote printed in 1957 that features a Komodo Dragon, one of the biggest lizards in the world. It can grow up to 2 to 3 meter long with the body weight of around 70 kilogram. This species of lizard inhabits in Komodo, Rinca, Flores Island of Indonesia. It is so huge that the local people would have called them as dragon - Komodo Dragon.

Komodo dragon is now protected under Indonesian law and the government has even set up a Komodo National Park to protect them. Komodo National Park consists of the three larger islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar which are the volcanic origin. The national park was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Besides its appearance in the banknote, the Komodo Dragon also use to feature in Rp50 Indonesian coins.

Indonesia - Rp2000 Banknote (2009 Series)

On 9 July 2009, Bank of Indonesia launched new banknote with the denomination of 2000 Rupiah. Inherited from its 2004 to 2005 series, this Rp2000 banknote adopts the theme of national hero during the nation's struggle for independence in which the portrait of national hero were depicted on the obverse of the notes.

The front features Pangeran Antasari, a national hero from Banjarmasin of South Kalimantan. The back features a traditional Dayak dance performed by a group of Dayak. Similar to the earlier issuance, this Rp2000 also come with uncut banknote in 2 pieces, 4 pieces and 50 pieces.

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque

One of the unique and landmark in Bandar Seri Begawan, capital city of Brunei, is the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque. It is a royal Islamic mosque that represents the most spectacular mosques in the Southeast Asia. It is such an important icon that the first and second series of Brunei banknotes have use it to feature the reverse side of the banknotes.

The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque appears features at the back of 1st and 2nd Series of Brunei banknote.

The mosque was named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin, the late father of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah who is the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan or King of Brunei Darussalam. The building was completed in 1958 and is an impressive example of modern Islamic architecture.

The architect of this mosque is an Italian and many architectural elements of the mosque has been heavily influenced by both Islamic and Italian styles. The mosque consists of marble minarets and golden domes with courtyards and fertile gardens filled with fountains. The mosque is circulated by a plethora of trees and floral gardens which in Islam it is considered as an interpretation of heaven.

Thai Banknote - Different Types of 15th Series

There are three denominations namely 50 Baht, 100 Baht and 1000 Baht consist of different types within the same series in the 15th Series of Thai Banknote. The 50 Baht was first issued in polymer note in 1997 and was later changed to paper note in 2004. No much change in term of the design of the note itself.

On the other hand, the 15th Series of 100 Baht note was first issued in 2004 with the monument of their Majesties King Rama V and King Rama VI features at the back of the banknote. However, the subsequent issuance of the same denomination note in 2005 has adopted the portrait of King Rama V in the Royal naval uniform at the reverse side of the note. The front design of these notes remain the same.

This 50 Baht note was the earliest issuance for the 15th Series of Thai banknote. It was released on 18 August 1997 and was one of the earliest circulation polymer banknote issued by Bank of Thailand. The 15th Series of Thai banknote was target to raise public attention on the contribution of the monarchs of the Chakri Dynasty especially in the development of agriculture, science religion and finance.

This 50 Baht polymer note was issued on 18 August 2007. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX in the uniform of the Supreme Commander. The back features the monument of King Rama IV, the Phra Pathom Chedi, a telescope, and a celestial globe.

The paper banknote of 50 Baht which adopted the same design of the polymer banknote was released on 1 October 2004.

Thai Banknote - 15th Series

The 15th Series of Thai banknote was released with an aim to draw the public attention to the benevolent deeds of the monarchs of the Chakri Dynasty in their contribution to the development of agriculture, science religion and finance.

There are five denominations in this series of banknote which include 20 Baht, 50 Baht, 100 Baht, 500 Baht and 1000 Baht. Among these, the earliest released banknote was the 50 Baht which was back then printed on opacified polymer substrate and was issued in August 1997. Follow by the 1000 Baht note which was introduced in November 1999 (Type 1 without hologram foil stripe) and 500 Baht note in August 2001.

The latest released notes are 20 Baht, 50 Baht, 100 Baht and 1000 Baht (with hologram foil strip) in between year of 2003 to 2005.

This 20 Baht banknote was issued by Bank of Thailand on 3 March 2003. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX in the uniform of the Supreme Commander. The back features the portrait of HM the King Ananda Mahidoll with the picture of HM proceeding to visit people at Sam Peng and Illustration of Rama VII Bride.

This 50 Baht banknote was issued by Bank of Thailand on 1 October 2004. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX in the uniform of the Supreme Commander. The back features the monument of King Rama IV, the Phra Pathom Chedi, a telescope and a celestial globe.

This 100 Baht banknote was issued by Bank of Thailand on 21 October 2005. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX in the uniform of the Supreme Commander. The back features the portrait of King Rama V in the royal naval uniform and his royal activities regarding the abolishment of slavery.

This 500 Baht banknote was issued by Bank of Thailand on 3 August 2001. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX in the uniform of the Supreme Commander. The back features the monument of King Rama III at the Maha Chetsadabodin Pavilion, the Loha Prasat at Ratchanaddaram Temple and a Chinese sailing ship.

This 1000 Baht banknote was issued by Bank of Thailand on 25 November 2005. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX in the uniform of the Supreme Commander. The back features The portrait of King Rama IX, the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam and the agricultural land managed in accordance with the New Theory.

This is a complete set of 1985 series of Vietnam banknotes. They are 10 denominations namely from the lowest 5 Hao, 1 Dong, 2 Dong, 5 Dong, 10 Dong, 20 Dong, 30 D0ng, 50 Dong, 100 Dong and 500 Dong. One of the interesting denomination for this series is the introduction of 30 Dong which is inherited from its earlier series.

The front note of the lower denominations from 5 Hao to 10 Dong features the Flag Tower of Hanoi that appears to be one of symbols of Hanoi city. The higher denomination notes, from 20 Dong onwards, use the portrait of Ho Chi Minh as their front features. The back of these note features the various scenery of Vietnam such as Ha Long Bay and also agricultural as well as industrial background.

Banknotes of French Indochina

I bought these two pieces of French Indochina banknotes during my recent visit to Vietnam. The currency of French Indochina was introduced between 1880 and 1952 with the unit of Piastre. The French Indochina refers to the French colonial empire at Southeast Asia which consists of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

The French Indochina currency, Piastre, was commonly used among these three countries prior to their independence. These French Indochina banknotes were issued by Banque de l'Indochine which was established in 1875 to look after the interest of France territories in Asia. It was until 1946 when Vietnam started to adopt its own currency Dong, follow by the Laos and Cambodia introduced theirs namely Kip and Riel in 1952 and 1953 respectively. Initially these local currency are set at par value with Piastre.

Unlike British or American colonial banknotes, French banknote has its unique features. One thing I like the most about these French colonial currency is the beauty of banknotes' colors. French colonial banknote designs are alike with French banknote where they printed colorfully and most importantly it adopted the local culture as their background. There were also multi local languages printed on the back of the banknotes.

The Institute of Issuance of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam (Institut D'Emission Des Etats Du Cambodge, Du Laos Et Du Vietnam) issued its own French Indochina banknote after French came back to Indochina in 1951. The institute was suppose to replace the role of Bank of Indochina (Banque de l'Indochina) to issuance the currency in these three nations. However, Bank of Indochina continued to issue Indochina currency until the Institute of Issuance was capable to produce the required amount for Indochina.

This series of 1 Piastre Indochina banknote was issued in 1954. One of the features of these notes is that they were issued by the same institute with the same design on the obverse of the notes. However, the reverse of the notes feature the local building that represent the symbol of each nation. There were three languages (Cambodian, Laotian and Vietnamese) printed on the reverse of the notes. The main nation language for each nation currency was printed in the top middle of the note, whereas other languages were printed on the bottom left and right of the note.

The portrait of Ho Chi Minh is depicted in all the Vietnamese banknotes after the reunification of both South and North Vietnam, following the fall of Saigon in 1975. Even before the reunification took place where the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh which ruled the northern half of Vietnam from 1954 to 1976, the portrait of Ho Chi Minh was already used to depict in the banknote issued by DRV in 1950s.

Ho Chi Minh or Nguyen That Thanh (1890 to 1969) was one of the famous Vietnamese Communist revolutionary and President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (also known as North Vietnam) from 1945 to 1969. He led his North Army to defeat the French Indochina War from 1946 to 1954. He later led the Vietnam's struggle to defeat the U.S. supported government in South Vietnam. However, he died in 1969 which he had missed the opportunity to witness the reunification of Vietnam in 1976 after the fall of Saigon to North Vietnamese armed forces on 30 April 1975. The former capital of South Vietnam was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in his honor.

It is quite normal that the King's portrait was used as the front feature of a country banknote. Prior to the reunification of South and North Vietnam in 1975, both regions have issued their own circulation notes. Interestingly, the South Vietnam was adopting the Independence Palace or the White House of South Vietnam as one of its banknote features. After the reunification of both South and North Vietnam, the Independence Palace was renamed as Reunification Palace.

During my recent trip to Ho Chi Minh city, I was able to pay a visit this historical building - Reunification Place. This palace was once the home and workplace of President of South Vietnam and was also the administration center of South Vietnam before the fall of Saigon city to North Vietnam in 30 April 1975. This palace was reconstructed in 1962 after the Norodom Palace (previous French Governor's Palace during the French colonial) was bombed and severely destroyed by the North army. It was completed and inaugurated in 1966 and since then has became the official presidential palace of the South Vietnam.

Development of Polymer Banknote in South East Asia

Polymer banknotes were developed by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). Australia was the first country that issued a polymer banknote as its country currency in 1988. The main objective of developing the polymer banknote is to increase the durability of the currency and to enhance the security features against counterfeiting.

The first polymer note in South East Asia issued by Singapore in 1990 in conjunction with its 25th Anniversary of independence.

In South East Asia, Singapore was the first country that issued its first polymer banknote in August 1990. The first polymer note was issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in form of $50 commemorative note in conjunction with its 25th Anniversary of independence. Subsequently, the MAS has issued the polymer circulating note in the denominations of $10, $5 and $2 in the year from 2004 to 2007. A special $20 commemorative polymer note also issued together with Brunei in 2007 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement between both countries.

Bank of Indonesia issued its first polymer note in 1993 to commemorate the successful 25 years of Indonesian Development.

On 1 March 1993, Bank of Indonesia (BI) issued its first ever polymer note in the denomination of 50,000 Rupiah to commemorate the successful 25 years of Indonesian Development from year 1969 to 1994. The second polymer note was issued by BI in 1999 in 100,000 Rupiah as a general circulating note to increase the money supply to overcome the worried by computer Millennium Bug in year 2000.

Brunei was the earliest South East Asia country that issued the general circulating polymer notes or non-commemorative polymer banknote. The first circulating polymer note was issued in denomination of $1, $5 and $10 by Bank Negara Brunei in 1996. Subsequently, the higher denomination polymer notes in $50 and $100 were also issued in 2004. Brunei has completed its circulating polymer note in December 2006 with the issuance of the highest denomination notes of $500 and $10000. The $10000 note issued by Brunei is the highest face value note in the world (approximately USD6,800).

Even though Vietnam was not the first Asian country that issued the first polymer note, it was the first Asian country and fourth country in the world (after Australia, New Zealand and Romania) that fully converted into polymer notes for its general circulation. Vietnam issued its first 50 Dong commemorative polymer note in summer 2001 by the State Bank of Vietnam in conjunction with its 50th Anniversary.

From December 2003 to August 2006, Vietnam issued the general circulating polymer notes in the denomination of 10000, 20000, 50000, 100000, 200000 and 500000 Dong. The front of these polymer notes feature the portrait of Ho Chi Minh, a famous Vietnamese nationalist leader and President of North Vietnam from 1954 to 1969. He led an army that won the French Indochina War from 1946 to 1954. He was also the main key personnel that led the North Vietnam's struggle to defeat the U.S. supported government in South Vietnam. The North Vietnam and South Vietnam were reunified in 1976 after the North army defeated the the South. Unfortunately, Ho Chi Minh was unable to see the victory by himself. He died seven year earlier before the reunification.

The back of these polymer notes depict the various famous buildings or scenes in Vietnam as described below. The Vietnamese words "NGAN HANG NHA NUOC VIET NAM" means "The State Bank of Vietnam". The Vietnamese words printed in the middle bottom of the notes describe the note value i.e. "MUOI NGHIN DONG" means "Ten Thousand Dong"

10,000 Dong

This 10,000 Polymer note was issued on 30 August 2006. The front features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the right and the Vietnamese Coat of Arms at centre left. The back depicts the petroleum industry, a developing economic sector in Vietnam. Vietnam is the third largest oil producer among the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.

20,000 Dong

This 20,000 Dong was issued on 17 May 2006. The front features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the right and the Vietnamese Coat of Arms at centre left. The back depicts the Japanese covered bridge over the Thu Bon river in the ancient town of Hoi An in the Quang Nam province. The bridge was built by the Japanese in 1593 and still intact as today.

50,000 Dong

This 50,000 Dong was issued on 17 December 2003. The front features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the right and the Vietnamese Coat of Arms at centre left. The back depicts a pagoda, one of the pre-eminent architectural structures of Vietnam as seen in Hue, the former capital of Vietnam. Hue lies between Vietnam's two rice-growing regions, the Red River delta in the north and the Mekong delta in the south.

100,000 Dong

This 100,000 Dong was issued on 1 September 2004. The front features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the right and the Vietnamese Coat of Arms at centre left. The back depicts Van Mieu and Quoc Tu Giam in the centre. Van Mieu or the Temple of literature is dedicated to Confucius and is representative of Confucian ways of thought and behaviour. Founded in 1070, it is the oldest school in Vietnam, giving it the distinction of being the most significant temple in Vietnam. Quoc Tu or the National University, established in 1076, is located next to the Van Mieu temple. Nowadays used as a park, Van Mieu and Quoc Tu served as educational institutions of national significance for over eight centuries.

200,000 Dong

This 200,000 Dong was issued on 30 August 2006. The front features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the right and the Vietnamese Coat of Arms at centre left. The back depicts an image from the Ha Long Bay in the Quang Ninh province of North-East Vietnam. Ha Long Bay covers an area of 1,553 square kilometres and comprises 1,969 islands with great biodiversity. A part of this area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional natural beauty and significant geomorphic and physiographic features. Ha Long, which literally translates as "the bay of descending dragons", has been called "a wonder of the earth erected towards the high sky" by a famous Vietnamese poet.

500,000 Dong

This 500,000 Dong was issued on 17 December 2003. The front features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the right and the Vietnamese Coat of Arms at centre left. The back depicts Ho Chi Minh’s birth place in Kim Lien village located in central Vietnam.

This series of Vietnam banknote consists of ten denominations that include 100 Dong, 200 Dong, 500 Dong, 1000 Dong, 2000 Dong, 5000 Dong, 10000 Dong, 20000 Dong, 50000 Dong and 100000 Dong. They were issued in the year of 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1991. The 10000 Dong and 50000 Dong were reprinted in 1993 and 1994.

The huge gap in between the lowest denomination i.e. 100 Dong to the highest denomination of 100000 Dong was mainly due to the high inflation rate happened in Vietnam in 1980s to 1990s. Despite the huge range denominations in Vietnamese banknote, this series of banknote is still as a valid currency in Vietnam. Occasionally, smaller denominations notes i.e. 500 Dong or 1000 Dong are given as small changes during the daily transaction.

Except the 100 Dong, the front of these notes feature the portrait of Ho Chi Minh, a famous Vietnamese nationalist leader and President of North Vietnam from 1954 to 1969. The back of these notes depict the agriculture activity, industrial production, ports and scenery.

This 50 Dong commemorative banknote was the first polymer banknote of Vietnam issued by State Bank of Vietnam in 2001 to commemorate 50th Anniversary of State Bank of Vietnam. This polymer note has a dimension of 165 x 82mm.

The front features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh (1890 - 1969), Vietnamese nationalist leader and President of North Vietnam (1954-69). He led the army that won the French Indochina War 1946 - 1954. He later led the North Vietnam's struggle to defeat the U.S. supported government in South Vietnam but died before the reunification of Vietnam in 1976. Vietnamese bronze drum, symbolising 4000 years of formation and struggle to defend the country is depicted in the center of the note.

The back features the headquarter of the State Bank of Vietnam located at Hanoi that was established in 1951. The Vietnamese words "NGAN HANG NHA NUOC VIET NAM" means "State Bank of Vietnam" and "NAM MUOI DONG" means "Fifty Dong".

Indonesia - 1968 Series (Sudirman Series)

This series of Indonesia banknote was issued by Bank Indonesia from 1968 to 1970. It was the last series of Indonesia banknote with a complete denomination. This series has a highest denominations in Indonesia banknote history with a total of 11 denominations. They are 1, 21/2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 Rupiah.

This series of banknote also known as Sudirman series and was printed by PN Pertjetakan Kebajoran. The series name was adopted from its front feature that depicts the portrait of Sudirman. Sudirman was the military commander of Indonesian forces during the country's fight for independence from the Dutch in the 1940s. The back of this series display the various scene of industry in Indonesia.

The denominations of 5000 and 10000 Rupiah have two different varieties in their serial number. It is learnt that these varieties came with the serial number of two and three alphabets.

These notes were printed by Perum Peruri. There was no specific theme for this series of notes. The obverse of these note vary from portrait of Indonesian hero to flower image and to muzical players. The reverse of these notes illustrate different scenery in Indonesia.

After a complete Sudirman series of Indonesia banknote issued in 1968, the subsequent issuance are not in full denomination. The series of Indonesia banknote issued from 1975 to 1977 has a total of five denominations. Among these, the higher denominations namely 1000, 5000 and 10000 Rupiah were issued in 1975 to replace the Sudirman series which believe to have a lot of counterfeit notes.

As mentioned earlier in 1971 Series (Diponegoro), only the 1000 Rupiah has been reissued in 1975 with the same design adopted for its 1971 series. Other notes of 1975 series i.e. 5000 and 10000 Rupiah have adopted a brand new design. There is not specific theme or portrait used for the remaining issuance of Indonesia banknotes. For instant, the front of 5000 note features a fisherman whereas the 10000 note displays the Ramayana frieze at Borobodur.

The lower denominations were issued in 1977 series in 100 and 500 Rupiah. They were printed by Perum Peruri. The obverse of 100 Rupiah illustrates a Javan Rhinoceros and the front of 500 Rupiah note depicts a women with Vanda orchid.

Indonesia - 1971 Series (Diponegoro)

This 1971 series of Indonesia banknote was meant to replace the sudirman series but was unissued due to unknown reason. This series of banknote consists of five denominations namely 100, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 Rupiah. The fronts of these note feature the portrait of Diponegoro, a Jawanese prince who opposed Dutch colonial rule during the Java war from 1825 to 1830.

Due to unsuccessful issuance of this series of note, there are only specimen notes available in the market and they are very rare with high value. However, only the 1000 Rupiah note of this Diponegoro series was finally printed and reissued in 1975. Even though the 1971 and 1975 issuance of 1000 Rupiah might look alike physically, there are many differences between these two notes. The later issuance (1975 series) note is slightly bigger in size than the earlier and year of issuance was printed in the middle of the note. Also, this later issuance note has a watermark of Gajah Mada in lieu of Diponegoro.

Cambodia - People's of Republic Kampuchea Series (1987)

Inherited from its 1979 series, the People's of Republic Kampuchea has reissued two additional notes in 1987 in the denominations of 5 Riels and 10 Riels. These notes adopted the exact same design from its previous issuance note, but using the different color design. The brown color 5 Riels note printed in 1979 has changed its color to red in its 1987 issuance. Similarly, the 10 Riels note was printed in green color for its latest 1987 issuance.

This is a series of Cambodian banknote under the regime of People's of Republic Kampuchea (PRK). The People's of Republic Kampuchea was established in 1979 after the overthrow of Democratic Kampuchea. Cambodia was ruled under this communist state from 1979 to 1993 under the first leadership of Heng Samrin.

This was a complete series of Cambodia banknote that represented a communist state back then. The design of this series of note was very similar to other earlier communist state banknotes i.e. Vietnam, Republic of North Korea and Republic of China which was people oriented base design.

This series of banknote was issued in 1979. It consists of eight denominations namely 0.1 Riel, 02 Riel, 0.5 Riel, 1 Riel, 5 Riels, 10Riels, 20 Riels and 50 Riels. The obverse of the note features a PRK party symbol. The reverse of the note depicts various important agricultural activities in the state.

Located in central Java, the Borobudur Temple is one of the famous Buddhist Monument from the 8th and 9th century. The construction of this Buddhist Monement was divided into three tiers. The surrounding walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs.

This is one of the complete series of Cambodian banknotes which was issued on 25 March 1995. It consists of seven denomination namely 1000 Riels, 2000 Riels, 5000 Riels, 10000 Riels, 20000 Riels, 50000 Riels and 100000 Riels. Except for the denomination of 1000 and 2000 Riels, the obverse of these notes feature the portrait of King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk Varman. The reverse of these notes feature the scene of historical monuments or temples in Cambodia.

Eventhough these notes were originally issued in 1995, some of these notes were reissued in year 1998. Those notes printed in year 1998 can be differentiated by wording of "1998" which was printed underneath the signature.

This 1000 Riels note was issued on 25 March 1995. The front features the Bayon Temple tower with the four faces of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The back features the scene of "Prasat Chan Chaya" square.

This 2000 Riel note was issued on 25 March 1995. The front features a scene of fishing activities at great lake "Tonle Sap". The frieze around the note is characteristic of the decorative art found on the Banteay Srei Temple. The back features the rear view of Angkor Wat Temple.

5000 Riels

This 5000 Riels note was issued on 25 March 1995. The front features the portrait of King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk Varman with a Banteay Srei temple on the left. The back features the New Market of Cambodia.

10000 Riels

This 10000 Riels note was issued on 25 March 1995. The front features the portrait of King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk Varman and the Bayon statue appears on the left. The back features a scene of traditional Water Festival.

20000 Riels

This 20000 Riels note was issued on 25 March 1995. The front features the portrait of King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk Varman in the background of Phnom Penh's river port. The back features the Throne Room of the Royal Palace of Cambodia.

50000 Riels

This 50000 Riels note was issued on 25 March 1995. The front features the portrait of King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk Varman and the sculture of the Preah Vihear Temple. The back features the road leading to Preah Vihear Temple with its surrounding scenery.

100000 Riels

This 100000 Riels note was issued on 25 March 1995. The front features the portrait of King and Queen of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk Varman and Monineath Sihanouk. The back features the scene of King and Queen receiving the homage of the people.

This series of Cambodian banknote consists of four denominations which are 100 Riels, 200 Riels, 500 Riels and 1000 Riels. These notes were issued from 1995 to 1999. One of the features of this series of Cambodian banknote is the year of the note issuance was printed at the bottom right corner of the note except 1000 Riels was printed at left corner. Despite the year of issuance and signature are varies, the designs of the note are identical.

The obverse of this series of banknote depicts the Cambodian historical icons and landmarks. These landmarks have included the famous Angkor Wat Temple, Bayon Temple, four faces of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and etc. The reverse features the scene of various agricultural activities such as rubber tapping, paddy harvesting etc.

The year of issuance was printed at the right corner of 100 Riels note.

This 100 Riels note was first issued on 27 December 1995. The obverse of the note features the Independence Monument with a standing lion stone. The royal coat of arm was printed on the upper left corner. The reverse features workers tapping the rubber trees.

This 200 Riels note was first issued on 27 December 1995. The obverse features the irrigation sluice gate and the royal coat of arms printed on the upper left corner. The reverse features the four faces of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.

500 Riels

This 500 Riels note was first issued on 27 December 1995. The obverse depicts the picture of Angkor Wat Temple and the royal coat of arms printed on the upper left corner. The reverse features the scene of paddy fields and farmers transplanting rice.

1000 Riels

This 1000 Riels note was issued on 24 December 1999. The obverse features Bayon temple that symbolizing the glorious culture of the Khmer people. The reverse depicts the scene of "Troh" bridge construction along the National Road No 6.

This $25 commemorative note was issued on 10 May 1996 in conjunction with the celebration of 25th Anniversary of Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The Monetary Authority of Singapore was established on 1 January 1971 under the Monetary Authority Singapore Act which passed by the Parliament in 1970. Under the MAS act, it gives MAS the authority to regulate all elements of monetary, banking and financial aspects of Singapore. Subsequent in 2002 MAS merged with the Board of Commissioners of Currency, it has then assumed the role of currency issuance.

This is another commemorative note of $2 denomination of the 3rd Series (Ship Series). This $2 note was issued by Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore in 1992 as part of the denominations of the 3rd Series.

Withdrawal of Indonesian Banknotes 1998 to 2001 Series

Bank of Indonesia is officially making an announcement on 26 November 2008 to withdraw the denomination of Rp10,000, Rp20,000, Rp50,000 and Rp100,000 (polymer note) which were the 1998 to 2001 Series with effective date of 31 December 2008. The withdrawal of these notes was one of the government routines or strategies to face out the older notes on the consideration of their security features. With this announcement made, these four denomination notes are no longer the legal tender in Republic of Indonesia.

However, for those people whom still hold these denomination notes are advised to go to the nearest branches of Bank of Indonesia to exchange to their new currency. There is a grace period given to public on the gradually withdrawal of these denomination notes from the market. The Bank of Indonesia has given 10 years right for public to exchange their notes in which the expire date will fall on 31 December 2018. Other commencial banks will only accept these notes for another 5 years which is untill 31 December 2013.

So, as a collector, have you added these 1998 to 2001 series of Indonesia notes into your collection? It will be cheaper to do it now than years later as they are beginning to obselete from the market.

Brunei $10,000 - The Highest Value Banknote

Besides Singapore, Brunei is another South-East Asian country that issues the $10,000 note which is one the highest face value in the world (approximately USD6,800). For information, Brunei and Singapore currency are at par exchange rate under the 1973 Currency Interchangeability Agreement. In deed, Brunei's first $10,000 note was issued during its 3rd Series in 1989; It was one of the biggest size banknotes with the measurement of 204mm x 134mm in South-East Asia countries.

In conjunction with 60th Birthday of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the Brunei Currency Board issued two new polymer notes in denomination of $500 and $10,000 on 28 December 2006.

Unlike all other Brunei polymer notes, this $500 polymer note has a special feature. Instead of bearing the portrait of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, it does away from its traditional with replacing it with the portrait of Sultan Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th ruler of Brunei Darussalam.

Brunei $50 and $100 Polymer Note

The forth series of Brunei banknote consists of polymer and paper notes. Despite the polymer was first introduced in 1996 for the lower denominations (i.e. $1, $5 and $10), the paper notes for the face value of $50 and above are still circulating. It was only until 2004, the Brunei Currency Board introduced the new $50 and $100 polymer notes to replace the older version of paper notes and make a complete set of common circulating polymer notes.

Inherited from its previous polymer theme design, these $50 and $100 adopted the same theme design. The fronts of these note feature the portrait of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and the Brunei Coat of Arms of Brunei printed in red on the far right. The backs of these notes feature the rain forest that make up the landscape of the Brunei Darussalam.

Singapore - Portrait Series (Polymer Banknote)

Singapore first introduced its $50 polymer banknote in 1990 in conjunction with its nation's 25th year anniversary. It has waited for more than a decade for Singapore to reintroduce its subsequent polymer banknote in circulation. Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), thus far, has issued three circulating polymer banknotes in the denomination of $2, $5 and $10 from 2004 to 2007.

The designs of these polymer notes are similar to their earlier portrait circulating paper notes, except a few changes such as unique security feature have been incorporated by using polymer technology. In addition, the color and size of these polymer banknote are same as its earlier paper notes.

This $2 polymer note was issued on 12 January 2006. The front features the portrait of first President of Singapore, En. Yusof Bin Ishak. The back illustrates the education theme where a group of pupils interacting with a teacher in a "Borderless Classroom". Three prominent institutions of learning are seen in the background. From the extreme right is the institutions are Victoria Bridge School, the old Raffles Institution at Bras Basah Road, and the College of Medicine.

This $5 polymer note was issued on 18 May 2007. The front features the portrait of first President of Singapore's, En. Yusof Bin Ishak. The back illustrates the garden city theme with the portrayal of the old tembusu tree (Fagraea fragrans) which still stands in the grounds of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The majestic tree of more than 200 years is characterised by its firm and towering presence. The tree bears small red berries and has white flowers that are exceptionally fragrant. The sturdy tree with its highly branched canopy, epitomises the spirit of Singapore - strong, resilient and continuously striving for progress.

This $10 polymer note was issued on 4 May 2004. The front features the portrait of first President of Singapore, En. Yusof Bin Ishak. The back illustrates a sport theme with Singaporean five popular sports. It depicts a jogger, a tennis player and a soccer player on one side, representing the most favoured land sports in Singapore. On the other side, swimming and sailing are pictured representing water sports. These are illustrated against a vibrant general design to convey the sense of energy and ruggedness symbolising sporting activities in general.

Singapore is one of the two Southeast Asia countries (besides Brunei) that issued the highest value banknote in the world. The highest value means its absolute value which is approximately US$6800 but not its denomination value. In term of the highest denomination value, recently the the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has issued a new 10 billion dollar note (worth only US$20) on 19 December 2008, one of the hyperinflation countries in the world.

The first $10,000 banknote of Orchid series issued by Monetary Authority of Singapore

Singapore first introduced its $10,000 banknote as the highest denomination of its Orchid series which was issued on 29 January 1973. The note has a dimension of 203 x 133 mm. It is one of the highest value currency in Asia. On its subsequent banknotes, the second (Bird) and third (Ship) series, this $10,000 banknote was continued to be introduced in 1980 and 1989.

The fourth series of $10,000 banknote was introduced on 9 September 1999. It was designed in gold color with the front features the portrait of Yusof Bin Ishak. The back features the future direction of Singapore economy, one of which is knowledge-based and technology-driven.

This commemorative note was issued in October 1992 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of 25th Anniversary of His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Negara Brunei Darussalam, accession to the throne. The background designs and ornamentation of this commemorative note were inspired by the traditional Malay and Muslim decorative art motives. The Third Series of Brunei Darussalam banknotes were issued by Brunei Currency Board in 1989. The series of notes consist of 8 denomination i.e. $1, $5, $10, $50, $100, $500, $1000 and $10000. It is the first post independence series of banknotes after Brunei became independence in year 1984.

The front feature the portrait of His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Daussalam. The back of these series notes feature scenery views of Bandar Sri Begawan, capital city of Brunei Darussalam.

One of the major changes from the previous two series is that this series has replaced the name of Kerajaan Brunei (Government of Brunei) to Negara Brunei Darussalam.

Half century ago, most of the Southeast Asia countries were very much depending on the agriculture activities such as growing rice, fishing, hunting etc to develop their country economy. Among all the agriculture activities, growing rice in the paddy field was considered as one of the most significant activities to Asian countries. This is simply because rice is the main food or staple food for most Asian.

Water buffalo is used to plough the paddy filed

Traditionally, farmers used the conventional technique to run the paddy field. Water buffalo was commonly used to help to plough the muddy paddy field because of its nature habitat that adapted so much to the wetland condition.

Therefore, we can see many of the earlier Southeast Asian banknotes depict this important agriculture activity. Indeed, this is a milestone to many developing Asian countries before advancing themselves with the modern technology. Even though nowadays the water buffalo is not common to be used to plough the paddy field, but occasionally it still can be seen in certain rural areas across Asian countries.

Most of these banknotes that depicted this agriculture activity were issued in 1950-an to early 1970-an. Malaya & British Borneo, Cambodia, Burma, Laos, Vietnam and Indonesia are among the Southeast Asian countries that used this significant activity as part of their banknote theme.

Thai Banknote - 14th Series

The theme of this 14th Series of Thai banknote intends to promote the contribution of the Chakri Dynasty Kings on the development of the country through various sectors or activities i.e. agriculture, education, religion and literary works. The Chakri Dynasty has ruled Thailand since the founding of King Rama I in 1782 until King Rama IX (current).

Three denominations were introduced in this series. They are issued in 100 Baht, 500 Baht and 1000 Baht. The reserve of these notes depict the great rulers of Thailand during the Chakri Dynasty.

This 100 Baht note was issued on 20 October 1994. The front features the the portrait of King Rama IX, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The back feature the statue of King Rama V and VI, King Chulalongarn and King Vachirawut

This 500 Baht note was issued on 3 April 1996. The front features the the portrait of King Rama IX, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The back features the King Rama I and II, King Phra Putayodfa and King Phra Putalertla Napalai

This 1000 Baht note was issued on 10 August 1992. The front features the the portrait of King Rama IX, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The back features the King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit on the background of the country development activities.

Thai Banknote - 13th Series

Inherited from the 12th Series, the 13th Series of Thai banknote consists of two denominations i.e. 50 Baht and 500 Baht. In conjunction of the the Bicentennial Celebration of Bangkok city in 1982, these notes adopted the theme of the vignettes of significant historical events of Bangkok city on the reverse side of the notes.

Despite the celebration was held in 1982, these notes were only issued in 1985 due to insufficient printing capacity.

This 50 Baht note was issued by Bank of Thailand on 20th September 1985. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX and the back features the picture of Statue of King Prachatipok (King Rama VII)

This 500 Baht note was issued by Bank of Thailand on 5th November 1987. The front features the portrait of King Rama IX and the back features the picture of Statue of King Phra Putayodfa Julalok (King Rama I)

The National Bank of Cambodia was established in 1954. The first ever banknote issued by the Cambodian bank was in 1955. This series of banknote consists of four denominations i.e. 1 Riel, 5 Riel, 10 Riel and 50 Riel. Riel is an official currency of Cambodia and it is denoted by KHR.

It is noted that the "Banque Nationale Du Cambodge" was printed at the reverse of the note. Indeed, this is a French words which mean The National Bank of Cambodia. The Cambodian was once under the French colonial until it achieved its Independence in 1953.

The pattern and design of 50 Riel was similar to the notes issued by the Institut d'Emission des Etats du Cambodge, du Laos et du Vietnam, a French Indochina currency (Piastres) commonly used in Cambodia, Loas and Vietnam during the French colonial.

When mention about Cambodia, one always relate it with Angkor Wat, one of the famous ancient temple in Southeast Asia. It has become a symbol of Cambodia and also the country's prime tourist location.

The Cambodian banknotes which issued in 1956 were very much reflected the ancient culture originated from the Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire. Many of these notes depict the elements of Angkorian architectural. They also display the Cambodian lifestyle which was mainly the agriculture activities.

This series of banknote were first issued by The National Bank of Cambodia in 1956 and subsequently reprinted in various years until 1970-an. Even though these banknotes were printed on the same year, but the design of the notes were completely different.

Cambodia was colonied by France until 1953. After its independence, the National Bank of Cambodia was established on the following year. The National Bank of Cambodia started to issued its own national currency in Riel to replace Piastres, a currency of French Indochina (a past region consisted of Vietnam, Cambodia and Loas) from 1955 to 1970.

This is a series of Cambodian banknotes that issued during the Kingdom of Cambodia from the Year 1961 to 1963. This series of notes consist of three denominations, namely 5 Riel, 10 Riel and 100 Riel.

They are printed in large sizes with colourful design and carried a theme of Cambodian culture and history. After all they are inexpensive for collectors to add into their album.

This series of the Cambodian banknotes were issued under the Khmer Republic from the Year 1972 to 1975. Four notes were issued with the denominations of 100 Riel, 500 Riel, 1000 Riel and 5000 Riel. Riel is an official currency of Cambodia. One Riel is subdivided into 100 Sen.

Indonesia - 1984 to 1988 Series Banknote

This 1984 to 1988 Series of Indonesian banknotes consist of five denominations. They were released in 100, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 Rupiah. One of the common features of these notes is that a phrase was printed in the bottom of the obverse of the note.

HERU SOEROSO DEL was printed on the denomination of 100 Rupiah

SOERIPTO DEL was printed on the denomination of 500 Rupiah

The word DEL was originated from DELINEAVIT which means "Photo taken by". HERU SOEROSO DEL means the photo was taken by Heru Soeroso and similarly SOERIPTO DEL carries the same meaning which is photo was taken by Soeripto Del. However, this feature was not continued to be used for the newer series of Indonesian notes.

100 Rupiah - 1984 Series

This 100 Rupiah note was introduced on 1 February 1985. The front features a Victoria Crowned Pigeon and the back features Asahan Dam.

500 Rupiah - 1988 Series

This 500 Rupiah note was issued on 29 January 1998. The front features the Rusa deer which are native to the Java Island and the back features the building of Bank Indonesia located at Ciberon, West Java.

1000 Rupiah - 1987 Series

This 1000 Rupiah note was released on 30 June 1987. The front features the Sisingamangaraja XII and the back features the Yogyakarta Kraton.

5000 Rupiah - 1986 Series

This 5000 Rupiah note was issued in 9 December 1986. The front features Teuku Umar, a national hero of Indonesia whom led a guerrilla campiagn in Aceh during the Dutch occupation. The back features Kudus tower.

10000 Rupiah - 1985 Series

This 10000 Rupiah note was introduced on 27 December 1985. The front features Raden Ayu Kartini, a pioneer in the area of women's right for native Indonesians and Prambanan temple, the largest Hindu temple compound in Centre Java, as the background. The back features a female university graduate and flag of Indonesia.

Rp100,000 Polymer Banknote issued by Bank of Indonesia

This is second polymer banknote issued by Bank of Indonesia in 1999. It was printed and issued in anticipation of a sudden increase of cash demand resulted from the worried by computer Millennium Bug in year 2000. A total of Rp50 trillion value of Rp100,000 banknotes were printed as one of key measurements in the event that the computer system crashed.

Bank Indonesia issues plastic money Rp. 100.000,-

Bank Indonesia will issue money in Rp 100.000 denomination on November 1, 1999 as an official payment instrument. "The money will be made of polymer substrate (plastic) that lasts longer and is more difficult to be counterfeited than paper," quoted from Bank Indonesia Governor Syahril Sabirin today in Jakarta. To avoid money frauds, the money is completed with anti counterfeiting visible and touchable element to enable the public being familiar with originality of the money.

The Governor explains that the issuance of new emission money is to ease and to accelerate cash transactions. The main picture in front of the money will be Dr. Ir. Soekarno and Dr. H. Mohammad Hatta, while on the other side will be the House of Representatives building, aimed at promoting our appreciation to both and the supreme institution for their democratic value.

The issuance is announced in the State Gazette of 1999 No. 206, while banks, post offices and other public related offices all over Indonesia will receive posters of the money as an announcement of the issuance in their offices and other public areas. Rp50,000 Polymer note issued with folder is the first Indonesian Polymer Banknote

This Rp50,000 is the first polymer banknote issued by Bank of Indonesia on 1 March 1993. It was issued to commemorate the successful 25 years of Indonesian Development from year 1969 to 1994. The front features the portrait of President Soeharto, the father of Indonesian Development with various sectoral developments such as culture, agriculture, infrastructure, education, chemical industry in the background. The back features the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and a Garuda Indonesia Boeing 747-400 airplane taking off, illustrating that the Indonesian development is entering the process of take-off.

The First Long Term 25-Year Development Period, beginning April 1, 1969 and ending March, 1994, has produced remarkable achievements in many sectors. To commemorate this success, the Bank Indonesia is issuing a limited number of Rp50,000 plastic bank notes with the theme '25 YEARS OF INDONESIAN DEVELOPMENT'. This note is the first plastic bank note issued in Indonesia and shall be legal tender.

The 1992 and 1993 Series consist of seven denominations that include 100 Rupiah, 500 Rupiah, 1000 Rupiah, 5000 Rupiah, 10000 Rupiah, 20000 Rupiah and 50000 Rupiah. All of these notes were issued by Bank of Indonesia in 1992 except the denomination of 50000 Rupiah was issued in 1993.

Despite these notes were known as 1992 or 1993 Series, they were continue printing throughout its subsequent years. This can be identified through the footnote on the obverse of note itself. Therefore, there are normally classified as 1992/1992, 1992/1993, 1992/1994 etc. It means this note is the 1992 Series but printed in year 1992, 1993 or 1994. Each note has different value with the different printed year. For example, the 1992/1992 has higher value than 1992/1998.

This 100 Rupiah note was introduced on 28 December 1992. The front features the Bugus Phinisi and the back features the Krakatoa, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.

500 Rupiah - 1992 Series

This 500 Rupiah note was issued on 28 December 1992. The front features the Orang Utan, one of the intelligent and great apes in the world and are found only in North Borneo Island. The back features a traditional house located in East Kalimantan.

1000 Rupiah - 1992 Series

This 1000 Rupiah note was released on 28 December 1992. The front features the Lake Tabo located at Sumatra Island. It is a lake and supervolcano. The back feature the stone jumping located at Nias, an island located off the western coast of Sumatra Island.

5000 Rupiah - 1992 Series

This 5000 Rupiah note was issued on 10 February 1992. The front features the Sasando Rote and the back features the Tri-coloured lake located at Kelimutu located at the central of Flores Island.

10,000 Rupiah - 1992 Series

This 10000 Rupiah note was introduced on 18 August 1992. The front features Hamengkubuwana IX, the second vice President of Indonesia during the Suharto's reign and the scout camping in the background. The back features the Borobudur, one of the famous Buddist monument in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia.

20,000 Rupiah - 1992 Series

This 20000 Rupiah note was released on 10 February 1992. The front features the Red Bird of Paradise and the back features the Clove flower and the map of Indonesia as background. This note was also re-issued in 1995 with new security thread on top of 1992 Series.

50,000 Rupiah - 1993 Series

The front features portrait of President Soeharto, the father of Indonesian Development with various sectoral developments such as culture, agriculture, infrastructure, education, chemical industry in the background. The 10000 Rupiah and 20000 Rupiah were issued in 1998; 50000 Rupiah and 100000 Rupiah polymer note were introduced in 1999. The obverse of these notes feature the national hero of Indonesia.

This 1,000 Rupiah note was issued by Bank of Indonesia on 29 November 2000. The front feature the national hero Kapitan Pattimura with the water mark of Cut Nyak Meutia. The back features Muatiara Island and Tidore with the fisherman boat in the middle.

5000 Rupiah - 2001 Series

This 5,000 Rupiah banknote was issued by Bank of Indonesia on 6 November 2001. The front feature the national hero Tuanku Imam Bonjol with the water mark of Cut Nyak Meutia. The back features the traditional sewing.

10000 Rupiah - 1998 Series

This 10000 Rupiah was issued by Bank of Indonesia on 18 February 1998. The front features the national hero Tjut Njak Dhien and the back features the Segara Anak Lake in Indonesia.

20000 Rupiah - 1998 Series

This 20000 Rupiah note was released by Bank of Indonesia on 23 January 1998. The front features the Ki Hadjar Dewantara, first Indonesian Education Minister and one of the pioneer in educational field. The back features the a group of children in classroom.

50000 Rupiah - 1999 Series

This 50000 Rupiah note was issued by Bank of Indonesia on 1 June 1999. The front features the national hero WF Soepratman and the back features an Indonesian flag being raised during a formal occasion.

Together with the release of this new note, it comes with 2, 4 and 45 pieces of uncut banknotes.

20,000 Rupiah - 2004 Series

This 20,000 Rupiah banknote was issued by Bank of Indonesia 29 December 2004. The front feature the national hero Oto Iskandar Di Nata, a hero from West Java in the nation's struggle for independence. The back feature an agriculture activity, tea plantation in West Java. This note also comes with uncut banknotes in 2, 4 and 45 pieces.

50,000 Rupiah - 2005 Series

This 50,000 Rupiah banknote was issued by Bank of Indonesia on 20 October 2005. The front features the national hero I Gusti Ngurah Rai from Bali in the nation's struggle for indepandence. The back features the Danau Beratan, Bedugul located at Bali Island. This note also comes with uncut banknotes in the pieces of 2, 4 and 45 notes.

100,000 Rupiah - 2004 Series

This 100,000 Rupiah banknote was issued by Bankno of Indonesia on 29 December 2004. The Value of Japanese Occupation Banknotes

I was asked by a collector on the value of Japanese Occupation Banknotes (JOB). As most of us are aware, these JOB have not commercial value. One of the main reasons is that the number of issuance of these notes was unknown. Some have quoted that billion of JOB had been issued during the war time. The exact number of issuance remains unknown to many of us. From what we understand, only small portion of these notes were printed with serial number. Majority of the notes were printed with only the block letter i.e MA, MB etc. How many copies did the Japanese print out for each block letter? The question can only be answered by the Japanese. Moreover, these notes also lack of security features. No watermark was used and no signature or date of issuance recorded on these notes. Some of these notes even printed on the low quality paper. This has resulted many of the notes that we see in the market today are the RE-PRODUCTION copy.

Nevertheless, these notes have their historical values and stories. I remember a story told by an old folk many years ago. During the end of the World War II in 1945, the Japanese notes were no long valid as they had surrender themselves to the Allies force after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many of the folks in rural area were not aware of this incident. They were cheated by traders from town whom used these Japanese notes (already invalid after the war) to purchase their agriculture products such as padi, corns etc. In return, they had received tonne of Japanese money which later turn up to be worthless and useless. That is why these invasion notes can recall many old folks' painful memory during the war time.

Propaganda Issues on Japanese Invasion Banknotes

Propaganda banknote is a conserted set of messages overprinted on a banknote that aimed to influence the opinion or behaviour of a large group or people. It was widely used during the World War II as a psychological tool. Many of these propaganda banknotes were prepared and disseminated by British Army through the aircrafts during the war time.

The obverse of the Malayan 10 Dollars Japanese Occupation Banknote with a diagonal propaganda message

The reverse printed with a propaganda message in three languages : Malay, Jawi Script and Chinese

The Malayan 10 Dollars Japanese Occupation Banknote was imitated and prepared by the British as a propaganda leaflet that dropped by the war aircraft over Malaya peninsular and Singapore in early 1945. This banknote has a diagonal propaganda message overprinted on the obverse of the note. It was printed in Malay language and read as "WANG JEPUN AKAN MATI BERSAMA2 JEPUN" or translated to English, "Japanese money will die together with the Japanese". The reverse of the note was printed with a propaganda message in three languages namely Malay, Jawi Script and Chinese. Translated to English, it reads "Today Japanese Money is no longer recognised in Burma, but the original British notes in Burma are the only legal tender. When British return to Malaya their notes will become valid again as usual. The original British Money will be valid forever. The Japanese notes will perish together with the Japanese."

There are also a number of other Malayan Japanese Occupation Banknotes that printed with the words "MALAYAN / WAR SOUVENIR" in red on the top and bottom of the 1 Dollar, 5 Dollars and 10 Dollars notes. In the middle of these notes were printed with the words "MALAYAN VJ" and "Grim Memories of 1941 - 1945" in red. It is learnt that these notes were printed at the end of the war.

Besides, there are notes in 1000 Dollars that found with overprinted with 1946 calender from January to December in red covered the full obverse of the note. This is another kind of War Souvenir notes printed during the end of the war.

In conclusion, money isn't just a medium of transaction for goods and services. During the war time, it was used differently by the military as a propaganda message to spread information and influence a large number of people to achieve their war agenda. For a collector, these notes not only have their historical value but commercial value as well.

Japanese Invasion Banknotes of Philippines

There are three types of Japanese Occupation Banknotes issued by the Japanese during the occupation in Philippines since 1942. The second series of Philippines' Japaneses Occupation Banknotes has has total of 4 notes. They are in denomination of 1 Peso, 5 Pesos, 10 Pesos and 100 Pesos only. This series of note has depicted the Rizal monument vignette on the obverse of the notes. Rizal monument was a tribute to the Philippine's national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Some of these notes were introduced with the serial numbers and others were printed just with two letter blocks i.e. PA, PB etc.

EZ-Link Cards With Orchid Series Banknotes

Ez-Link is so common used by most of the Singaporean for their daily trips on MRT, LRT or buses. Middle of last year, the Singapore Mint launched its first ever limited edition of Orchid Series Currency Notes Ez-Link cards. The Orchid Series Currency Notes is the first series of banknotes issued for circulation between 1967 and 1976 in Singapore.
