$2 Cupro-Nickel coin issued by the Singapore Mint to commemorate the event of F 1 2008 in Singapore.
Singapore has successfully host the inaugural Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix from 26 to 28 September 2008. It was the first ever night race in Formula 1 history kicked off at Marina Bay Street Circuit. The Spanish driver, Fernando Alonso of the Renault Formula 1 team, has won his first championship title for the Year 2008.
To commemorate such meaningful event of the first ever night race in Formula 1 history and first ever street race in Asia, The Singapore Mint issued a commemorative coin on 12 September 2008 to commemorate this auspicious event.
The obverse of the coin features the two most recognizable icons in auto racing, namely a Formula 1 car in full throttle and the winning chequered flag. The background of this coin features the spectacular mood of dazzling lights and vibrancy of the night race and landmarks in the Marina area that forms part of the street circuit.
